Funny

I thought this was a great quote of the night: "That's not a Maverick. That's a sidekick."

I like her

The video cuts off before she's finished--I don't know why. She has an amazing style. Something about the way she moved and talked, I kept half-expecting her to burst into song. And yet not at all corny.

Recount

I heard about Recount because I'm a big Whedon dork and politics junkie and Whedonesque lives merrily alongside TPMElectionCentral in my Google Reader.

This movie is so good that you kind of forget that you know the (crummy, horrible, nasty, awful, dispiriting) outcome and get caught up in the twists and turns. I actually found myself thinking that maybe the Gore camp had a chance of winning this time. But alas, it's not a science fiction story set in an alternate universe.

I can't wait to see what Danny Strong (Buffy alum, hence the Whedon reference above) is going to do with Brown v. Board of Education.

Remember the Milk

This application is already starting to save my booty.

Remember The Milk (or RTM, which is a thousand times easier to type) is essentially an online to-do list on steroids that has the capability to follow you around the internet and on your phone to help ensure that you get stuff done. It's so easy to use that, with the exception of the iPhone optimized version, I haven't yet felt the need to curse and/or throw things while using it.

So...
Here's what it looks like:

You can see that I'm a bit behind on a couple of things. So, it's not like it's a magical motivator. But still...helpful. You can categorize your tasks into lists, and you can make as many lists as you like. You can also share lists with other users. I share the Cleaning and Family lists with Brandon.

But here's what's really cool:

An RTM widget right on iGoogle, which is my homepage. So, whenever I open up the internets, I get a healthy dose of "hey, you've got stuff to get done!". Sure, it hasn't quite motivated me to clean the house, but you can't see all the things I have gotten done...and they are many.

Lastly, and perhaps the most useful of all:

RTM in my Gmail! Complete with little red reminders that I'm overdue on stuff. There's something about the Gmail integration that works particularly well for me. I check my email fanatically and am devoted to an empty inbox (admire my beautiful empty inbox), so maybe I'm already in the mindset for efficiency and accomplishment when I see RTM in that right sidebar. I don't know. What I do know is that more than daily I check email and note a task that needs doing and then...I get up and do it!

Amazing!

It also plays well with mobile-friendly apps like twitter and jott and even has an iPhone "optimized" version, though I'll confess that so far I'm not in love with that.

iPhone!

So the hardest part of getting the iPhone was waiting in line. And really, the line wasn't that bad. I checked my facebook on an iPod Touch and twittered and checked in with school on one of the laptops. The laptop was basically mine, minus the robot and skull stickers and plus a more gratifying clack of the keyboard.

Every store should have toys to play with while you wait!

The next pain in the booty thing is updating my phone number with everyone and everything.

My Pretty New Blog

In an effort to keep things organized and compartmentalized into their own shiny little boxes, I've started a new blog for my student teaching.

The general idea is that I'll be able to have those thoughts ready and readable without having to wade through all the random stuff I like to post here, and keep this place as a home for the articles, videos and other web detritus that I find here and there.

And of course there's always the BurkeWicker blog that I promise we'll update more and more. I've put it in my organizer and everything!

Picasso's Guernica in 3D

Picasso's Guernica in 3D - by Lena Gieseke

Another incredible video. Sadly not embed-able, but totally worth clicking through to see it. Her demo reel is worth a look, too, and includes a short "making of" for the Guernica piece.  My only complaint is that Guernica is in black and white, there's something about the rusts and reds in the original that is sort of sanitized out of this version.

Still, v. cool.

Matt

I thought this was pretty awesome. Stride gum saw this guy's video and sent him around the world to make a bigger, better video, full of much awesome. It's a groovy thing, and I guarantee if you watch it, you'll feel all warm and fuzzy and sunshiney inside.
